Ex-Maldivian president slams U.S.for recognizing new gov't
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-11 02:41

Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed on Friday criticized Washington for its recognition of newly appointed president of the island country in anticipation of visits by top U.S.officials on Saturday.

Nasheed said it was unfortunate that the U.S. government had decided to recognize the new regime led by Mohammed Waheed Hassan.

"We want the friendly countries to assess the situation. This is the Indian Ocean and we need stability if one wants have a secure region. Maldives needs stability since it has the biggest economy in the Indian Ocean," he said.

"We too want all the countries to think hard and use good judgment before they make pronouncements," Nasheed added.

However, he said Maldives does not rely on the international community to bring about a solution to his conflict with the newly appointed president. "We are relying on the people of Maldives to do it," he said.

Nasheed's statement came when U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Robert Blake is to visit the island nation on Saturday.

UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Oscar Fernandez-Taranco is also on a visit to Maldives. The senior UN official met with Waheed Hassan on Friday and would meet Nasheed later on to ease the political unrest in the islands nation.
