Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-21 10:42

Myanmar President U Thein Sein met with visiting Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Dr. Surin Pitsuwan in Nay Pyi Taw Monday, official sources from the capital said.

Surin also met Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin, National Planning and Economic Development Minister U Tin Naing Thein and Minister of Information and Culture U Kyaw Hsan.

No details about their meetings were immediately available.

Invited by U Wunna Maung Lwin, Surin arrived Yangon on Sunday for a first five-day special visit to Myanmar to monitor the country's latest development after the new government assumed office in March 2011.

During the visit, Surin will also have round-table discussions with officials at the Foreign Ministry and make a field trip to once-cyclone-hit Ayeyawaddy region and assess progress of Nargis recovery efforts.

Before wrapping his visit on Thursday, Surin is also scheduled to meet the international humanitarian community and representatives of local civil society as well as Aung San Suu Kyi, the chairwoman of the opposition National League for Democracy ( NLD).

Myanmar was accorded alternate chairmanship of ASEAN in 2014 at the 19th ASEAN Summit held in Bali, Indonesia in November 2011.

Myanmar's undertaking of 2014 ASEAN chair could enable the country to extensively take part in the regional affairs as well as international affairs as commented.

Myanmar was also admitted to the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) as a permanent member on Sept. 20, 2011.

ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
