Large weapons cache seized in Thai border province
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-23 15:07

Thai authorities seized a large cache of firearms and ammunition in the northeastern border province of Surin, Bangkok Post online reported on Thursday.

Department of Special Investigation Director-General Tharit Pengdit said Thursday that the cache included 36 rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), 64 rounds of 60 m.m. mortar shells, 144 M79 and M203 grenades and 1,437 rounds of ammunition for SKS rifles.

The weapons belonged to an influential figure in the Northeast and some of them were believed to have been for use in creating unrest in the country, he said.

Pengdit said the weapons stash was not linked to the three bomb explosions in central Bangkok on Feb. 14.

The DSI chief said he could not discuss the details of the suspected arms dealer and other people involved as it would affect the investigation.
