One killed, nearly 40 injured in train collision in S. Thailand

One person was killed and some 38 others were injured when Bangkok-Yala express train collided with a road tanker loaded with crude oil in southern Surat Thani province Sunday morning, local sources said.

The train driver, truck driver and train engineering technician were seriously injured and admitted to a hospital in the province. However, the train driver was pronounced dead at the hospital later, a staff at the hospital told Xinhua by phone.The other passengers were slightly wounded, she said.

According to a senior officer of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), the accident occurred at about 8.25 a.m. local time at a railway crossing in Phun Phin district of southern Surat Thani province when the train was heading to the southernmost Yala province.

The road tanker which was loaded with about 15,000 liters of fuel oil cut in front of the train at the railway crossing which has no train barrier. One bogie was derailed.

The southbound trains have resumed services after the SRT cleared the railway.
