Indonesia is eager to increase broadcasting coverage of state-run public broadcasting institutions (LPPs) of Televisi Republik Indonesia (TVRI) and Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI), a minister said here on Monday.
Minister for Communication and Informatics Tifatul Sembiring told a parliamentary hearing that the government prioritizes development of the LPPs.
Sembiring said that digitalization is the best solution for LPPs as in certain areas, especially in the main island of Java, analog frequency is too crowded.
"Thus, the situation blocks LPPs to increase their broadcasting coverage. Digitalization is the best solution as one channel could be divided into 12 frequencies. In short, such problem could be solved by technology," said Sembiring.
Sembiring took an example of problem solving in the telecommunication sector.
"When 2G is crowded, it is developed to be 2.5G, 3G, 4G," said Sembiring.
He said that 85 countries have migrated to digital frequency from analog one.
According to Sembiring, the TVRI has pioneered to be the first digital station in December 2010 and operates in four cities.
However, he said, in several regions, especially in Kalimantan Island, frequency of the analog system is still wide open.
Rosarita Niken Widiastuti, president director of RRI, said that as the LPPs should cover wide area of Indonesia, they take an option to cooperate with local governments.
"Local governments build their own LPP but they only cooperate with RRI and TVRI in their broadcasting programs. This policy is aimed to cover blank spots," said Widiastuti. |
