India is to set up its fifth missile hub in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh in three years, local media reported Monday.

The surface-to-air missile unit, spread over 630 acres, will come up at a cost of 300 billion rupees (6 billion U.S. dollars) at Ibrahimpatnam in the state's Rangareddy district, The Times of India newspaper reported.

The foundation stone for the project by state-owned Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) was laid by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy on Sunday, in the presence of Indian Minister of State for Defense M. Pallam Raju.

An estimated 6,000 missiles are expected to be produced at the unit. Moreover, missile production will go up as the project capacity is expanded to keep up with the demand for missiles, the newspaper said.
