6 killed in bridge collapse in northern India
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-25 16:15

At least six people were killed and 17 others were injured early Sunday when an under-construction bridge collapsed near Haridwar in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, said police.

The Choras bridge was over the holy river of Alaknanda at Srinagar town in Uttarakhand's Pauri district.

Uttarakhand's newly elected chief minister Vijay Bahuguna has ordered an inquiry into the incident and was rushing to the scene of the accident.

The Choras bridge collapsed when some laborers were working there. All the six bodies have been retrieved from the debris, said police.

Police said the poor quality of construction material could be the cause of the collapse.
