Indonesia mulls deploying military to tackle protests
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-26 14:18

The Indonesian government on Monday was urged to consult the House of Representatives before deploying military in facing mass protest on Tuesday against the plan to raise subsidized fuel from April 1.

Tubagus Hasanuddin, vice speaker of Commission I focusing on military, police and foreign affairs, told reporters that the law allows military deployment to assist police's job in securing vital assets.

"The law stipulates that there are 14 operations for military aside of war operation. One of them is assisting police. However, the law also says that it requires a political policy. Therefore, the government should discuss it with the House of Representatives in dealing with mass protests," Hasanuddin told reporters before a parliamentary hearing.

He said that he has talked to the spokesman of Indonesian military Rear Admiral Iskandar Sitompul that military personnel have not been yet deployed.

"But, they are already prepared to deal with the mass protests, " said Hasanuddin.

Later on, Machfud Siddiq, speaker of Commission I, said that the parliament has not agreed yet the government's plan to raise subsidized fuel.

"In the parliamentary budget body, we have not reached an agreement. Some parties still have objection about the fuel rise option and some of them also have objection about scheme of cash money aid (to poor people related to the price rise)," said Siddiq.
