Indonesian president not to attend ASEAN summit
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-31 14:40

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will not attend the ASEAN Summit in Cambodia next week as the parliament forced his government to put off the plan to increase subsidized oil price, presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said Saturday.

"The President has delegated the vice president (Boediono) to represent him at the meeting," he was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.

Julian said President Yudhoyono has decided not to attend the summit so that he could personally monitored conditions in the country especially with regard to the government plan to raise the price of subsidized fuel.

"This way he could give directives personally," he said.

The parliament earlier Saturday decided to allow the government to increase oil price should the average crude oil price in the past six months is over 15 percent higher than the assumption in the state budget this year.

The decision is likely to abort the government plan to increase the subsidized oil price on April 1, as the average crude oil price in the past six months is about 10.94 percent higher than the budget assumption and the global oil price has declined recently.

The parliament decision was made after massive protest against oil price hike have continued for several days.

Some of the protests had turned to violence as the police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse furious protesters.

The summit of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations is scheduled to be held in Phnom Penh on April 2-4, 2012.

The 20th summit plans to discuss among others the ASEAN Declaration of One Community, One Destiny, the Declaration of ASEAN leaders on Narcotics-Free ASEAN in 2015.
