DPRK elects Kim Jong-un as top leader
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-14 11:25

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has elected Kim Jong Un as the country's supreme leader according to its latest constitutional amendments, the official news agency KCNA reported Saturday.

Kim's election to the top post of the DPRK came during the fifth session of the 12th Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) on Friday at the Mansudae Assembly, where delegates also named late leader Kim Jong Il as "eternal chairman" of the powerful National Defense Commission, the agency said.

These leadership adjustment decisions were all part of the approved amendments to the country's constitution during the SPA session.

The SPA is the supreme power organ and the legislative body of the DPRK. It holds the highest position of authority in the country. The parliamentary session is usually held annually.

Addressing the SPA session, Kim Yong Nam, president of the SPA Presidium, said Kim's accession to the DPRK's top post reflected "the ardent desire and unanimous will of all the party members, servicepersons and other people."

Moreover, the DPRK's Premier Choe Yong Rim said in his government report to the SPA that the total industrial output last year increased by two percent compared to that of 2010, adding that his cabinet would focus on light industry and agriculture this year.

Earlier this week, Kim Jong Un was appointed as first secretary of the DPRK's ruling Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) and chairman of the party's Central Military Commission.
