Japanese fertility rate remains unchanged at 1.39
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-05 15:07
Japan's fertility rate in 2011 remained almost unchanged at 1.39 from the previous year, health ministry officials said on Tuesday.

Fertility rate of a population is the average number of children that would be born to a woman over her lifetime. Japan's fertility rate slowly recovered from the 2005 record low of 1.26.

The National Institute of Population and Social Security Research estimated the fertility rate of women in their 20-25 is about 1.33, reflecting the young women are not interested in having baby. And the number of women who would like to remain single for a lifetime is also increasing.

Some researchers even said Japanese people could theoretically become extinct in 1,000 years due to the declining birth rate.

The newest fertility rate will be officially released soon by Japan's health, labor and welfare ministry.
