South Korean President Lee Myung-bak' s elder brother Lee Sang-deuk faced questioning by prosecutors Tuesday morning over bribery allegations.
The former six-term legislator is suspected of taking kickbacks from local savings banks in return for helping the troubled banks avoid regulatory penalties.
"I am heartbroken," the 77-year-old told reporters when asked how he felt. "I will sincerely respond to all questions (from prosecutors)."
Operations of a dozen of savings banks, including the ones were suspended last year due to liquidity shortage and illegal lending.
Separately, prosecutors suspect some 700 million won (604,800 U. S. dollars) found in a bank account of Lee's aide might have been a potential sign of bribery.
Lee has denied all allegations. |
