Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-06 11:08

Papua New Guinea's (PNG's) caretaker Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has claimed victory in his electorate in the country's Southern Highlands, Australian media reported on Friday.

According to the Australian Associated Press (AAP) reports, the PNG Electoral Commission is yet to make a statement, but O'Neill told PNG's Post-Courier newspaper: "I am now re-elected for the third term and I thank everyone for their support."

If confirmed, O'Neill will become the first re-elected Prime Minister in PNG's general election.

O'Neill, 46, leader of the People's National Congress Party, has won his Ialibu-Pangia seat with 32,424 votes against his nearest challengers Independent's Eke Lama, who secured 5252 votes, and Raphael Noipo, with 5251 votes, according to the PNG Electoral Commission website.
