India's anti-corruption icon to form political party before 2014 elections
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-02 19:29

India's anti-corruption icon Anna Hazare Thursday indicated that he and his team members would form a political party before the next general election in 2014.

"There is nothing wrong with forming a party, we need to provide an alternative to the people. We will travel across the country for the next two years," the 75-year-old Gandhian told a huge gathering of his supporters at Jantar Mantar in the heart of the Indian capital.

Hazare and his supporters, popularly called Team Anna, who are currently on fast at Jantar Mantar demanding that the Indian government enact a stringent anti-graft law, the Lokpal (Ombudsman) Bill, also announced that they would end their fast unto death Friday.

He has been fasting since Sunday while his aides, Arvind Kejriwal, Gopal Rai and Manish Sisodia, have not eaten in nine days.

Reacting to Hazare's speech, the country's ruling Congress leader and Minister Ambika Soni said that "Team Anna's political intentions are out in the open."

"We were saying this from the first day that Team Anna inspired by politics. It's good that their intentions are out in the open. It's best they come out and be part of the same system they abuse always. If they call off their fast, it's a good thing. Don't hold government to ransom," she said.

The minister added: "They have made their point and accusing the government of not bringing Lokpal is not true. It's passed in Lok Sabha and its now with the Select Committee."

Hazare had launched a nationwide protest and a 13-day fast unto death against corruption in August last year, forcing the Indian government to accelerate the legislation of the anti-graft law.
