At least 11 people including two Pakistani soldiers and nine militants were killed in cross-border firing on Thursday evening when Afghanistan-based militants attacked a Pakistani check post in its northwestern district of Dir, local media reported.

According to reports, an unknown number of militants from the Afghan side armed with automatic and conventional weapons attacked a Pakistan army check post in Upper Dir bordering Afghanistan.

The militants, at first, fired half a dozen of rockets at the check post and fired with the automatic weapons, killing two Pakistani soldiers on the spot.

In retaliation, Pakistan army personnel gunned down at least nine militants and wounded 13 others who were taken away by the retreating miscreants.

Both Pakistan and Afghanistan have been blaming each other for cross-border attacks.

Afghanistan says that Pakistani forces fire rockets on its border regions, which caused casualties and displaced hundreds of families.

Pakistan claims that Afghanistan-based militants have been launching attacks on its border posts and residential areas, and security forces in Afghanistan have failed to stop such attacks.

Gen. John Allen, commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, visited Islamabad on Aug. 2 and had a meeting with Pakistan army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, during which they discussed border coordination matters.

"This meeting was another in a series of opportunities for the commanders to continue building upon the growing operational cooperation between the Afghanistan National Security Force, the Pakistan military and ISAF," said a Pakistan Army statement released after the meeting.

The two sides also shared a responsibility for protecting the Afghan and Pakistani soldiers working in the border region, it said.

On Thursday, Pakistan army's chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Khalid Shameem Wynne, called on President Asif Ali Zardari to discuss regional and national security issues.

He also briefed the president on the Pak-Afghan border situation, the deployment of military troops in tribal areas and the dimensions of Pakistan's cooperation with the ISAF and Afghan forces on the border.
