India home to world 11th largest population of Internally Displaced People
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-28 11:44

India is home to the world's 11th largest population of Internally Displaced People (IDP), who are forced to relocate fearing religious, ethnic or other persecution in conflict-induced situations, reported local daily The Times of India on Tuesday.

The numbers come from the IDP database created by the Norwegian Refugee Council and was created at the UN's request, said the paper.

There were over 506,000 IDP in India as of December 2011. However, latest alert reports said 400,000 people have been displaced in the northeast Indian state of Assam, which was triggered by the recent communal riots between Muslims and local Bodo people. The new addition raised India's IDP population to 906, 000.

This is significantly higher than war-torn Afghanistan, South Sudan, Occupied Palestinian Territory of West Bank and Gaza Strip, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the paper said.

With 479,000 IDPs, India's northeast has witnessed the country 's biggest exodus of people who were forced to leave their homes. The Kashmiri Hindu diaspora, estimated at 250,000, constitutes India's second largest IDP population.

Violence from extreme left-wing Naxal rebels has also forced about 150,000 people to leave their homes while another 29,000 are displaced by communal violence in the western state of Gujarat and the eastern state of Orissa.
