Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-09-16 01:36

India's main opposition Bhratiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to organize a nationwide strike on Sept. 20 to protest government decision to raise diesel price and allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail sector.

BJP leader L.K. Advani announced that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has decide a nationwide strike on the 20th of this month.

"I am sure that the suffocation felt by the people for a long time is about to come to an end," he said.

Advani also said "it would be prudent and wise for the government itself to decide that they do not wait till 2014 for the people to give their opinion about the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government."

"Let them call for an early election. Let the people make a decision," he said.

The Indian government has hiked price of diesel by 5 rupees ( about 0.1 U.S. dollar) and allow foreign direct investment in India's huge multi-brand retail market.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday tried to justify his decision by saying that the country has to brace for bold reform to keep the economy grow.
