Angry protesters Tuesday torched a government vehicle during an anti- Islam movie protests in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The government vehicle was set ablaze in Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

The clashes broke out after policemen fired tear smoke shells and resorted to baton charging, to chase the protesters marching towards the city centre to register their protest against the anti- Islam movie. The protesters threw rocks and stones on police contingents, thereby triggering clashes.

"Few miscreants set ablaze a Gypsy bearing registration number JK18/0070 of Kulgam municipality in Srinagar during protests," said a police spokesman. "Peaceful marches were taken out at many places across the valley against the blasphemous movie clips."

Clashes were also reported at other places, however police spokesman said the stone pelting youth were chased away by policemen.

The protesters shouting anti-US and anti-Israel slogans, were demanding punishment to the filmmaker. They also burnt the effigy of US President Barack Obama and US flags to vent their anger.

The trailers of the film mocking Prophet Mohammed available on video sharing website YouTube sparked violent protests and evoked condemnations worldwide. The film titled "Innocence of Muslims" made by an American Jewish has portrayed Prophet of Islam - Mohammad in insulting terms.

Meanwhile, a complete shutdown was observed Tuesday across the Muslim majority areas of region in response to a call given by religious organizations, trade bodies and separatist groups to protest the controversial anti-Islam movie mocking Prophet Mohammed.

Shops, business establishments, educational institutions and government offices remained closed in wake of the shutdown call. The vehicular traffic also remained off the roads.

Authorities fearing clashes in some parts of Srinagar city and other sensitive towns deployed paramilitary troopers of India's Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and policemen in full-riot gears to prevent clashes and violent demonstrations.

Massive protests have rocked middle-east. In Libya four Americans including the US ambassador, Christopher Stevens were killed last week when a mob attacked the US consulate in Benghazi during such protests.

The region's government has asked the New Delhi's Ministry of Information Technology to block the trails of film available on YouTube citing it has potential to trigger violent protests.

In 2010, at least 14 people including a policeman were killed during protests in Indian-controlled Kashmir against the burning of Islamic holy book-The Quran by an American pastor.
