Communal tension remains high in southern Indian city
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-11-13 13:40

Communal tension has remained high since Sunday in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, after the construction of a canopy over a Hindu temple abutting the historic Muslim Charminar monument sparked protest from Muslims, local media reported Tuesday.

The incident led to the withdrawal of support by a local Muslim party to the Congress state government in Andhra Pradesh and United Progressive Alliance central government in New Delhi, said Indo-Asian News Service.

The 400-year-old monument and the usually busy markets around it were deserted since Sunday. Police on Monday briefly detained a Hindu religious leader and some opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders near the site.

Some local Muslim legislators were arrested at Charminar on Sunday when they staged a protest over erection of the canopy on the temple structure.
