Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-11-25 18:44

A total of 46 structures including residential houses and cow sheds were gutted in a fire on Sunday in Indian-controlled Kashmir, but no casualties have been reported, officials said.

The fire broke out early Sunday in village Frislan near Pahalgam town of Anantnag district, around 110 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Today in a devastating fire 46 structures including residential houses and cow sheds were gutted at village Frislan," said a police spokesman. "However, no loss of life or injury was reported in the blaze that engulfed the tiny village."

Fire tenders and firefighters were pressed into service to douse the flames and bring fire under control.

Authorities said efforts were underway to shift the inhabitants to safer places.

The cause of the fire was not known immediately. Officials said the details were being ascertained.

"Fire started from a house early at around 2:30 a.m. (local time) and quickly spread in the vicinity. By the time fire tenders reached the spot, the flames had engulfed the village," said Nissar Ahmad Lone, a local resident.

Villagers said several horses, cows and sheep were charred in the inferno.

Residents in Indian-controlled Kashmir store charcoal and fuel for heating purpose during the winter months, which increases chances of fire.
