A cold spell that hit South Korea on Wednesday pushed peak electricity demand to a fresh high, according to the state-run power distributor, prompting a power shortage alert to be issued.
The average peak demand reached 75.89 million kilowatts between 10 a.m. local time and 11 a.m. local time, surpassing the previous high of 75.17 million kilowatts that was set on Dec. 18, the Korea Power Exchange (KPX) said.
Power authorities issued a "blue" alert, the second in the country's five-stage alert system, as electricity reserves fell below 4 million kilowatts due to a surge in electricity consumption.
It marks the sixth time this winter that the "blue" alert has been issued.
Wednesday's temperature in Seoul dropped to a low of minus 14. 5 degrees Celsius, while other parts of the country experienced temperatures as low as minus 23.5 degrees Celsius. |
