A special fast track court in the Indian capital Saturday brought charges, including that of rape and murder, against five of the six accused in the gangrape of a 23-year-old medical student on a moving bus last December, an official said.
The fast track court, which was set up last month, would begin the trial of the five accused Tuesday, the official said, adding that the chargesheet contains the victim's statement in deathbed, details of the accused, evidence and forensic reports.
Though five of the accused face a maximum punishment of death penalty if convicted, the sixth accused, being under 18 years of age, would be tried under the juvenile justice act and is likely to get away with lighter punishment, up to a maximum of three years.
The gangrape shocked India and sparked massive public outcry over the rising incidents of sexual assaults on women.
The victim was gangraped allegedly by the six accused, currently in judicial custody, on Dec. 16 last year on the bus which she and her boyfriend had boarded after watching a movie at a multiplex in the south of the national capital.
The duo were also beaten up mercilessly by the accused before they were thrown out of the vehicle.
The Delhi University student died of her injuries earlier last month at a hospital in Singapore, where she was shifted after her condition worsened at a government hospital in the Indian capital.
