India on Wednesday successfully testfired its supersonic BrahMos cruise missile from a warship off the coast of the western state of Goa, sources said.
"The missile, with a range of 290 kms, was testfired from the Indian Navy's Russian-built warship INS Tarkash and it successfully hit the target off the Goa coast," the sources said, adding the warship was commissioned in last November.
BrahMos is a joint venture between India's state-owned Defense Research and Development Organisation and Russia's NPO Mashinostroeyenia, which have together formed BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited.
Known as the world's fastest cruise missile which travels at speeds of Mach 2.8 to 3.0, BrahMos can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft or land. While the land-launched and ship-launched versions of BrahMos are already in service and India is readying the air and the submarine-launched versions.
