The UN Security Council members should continue looking for coordinated approaches that would enable the Syrians themselves to resolve the crisis in the country, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Wednesday.

According to the Kremlin press service, Medvedev made the remarks during his phone conversation with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The president also said that Syrians should resolve the crisis themselves without external intervention.

"These considerations motivated Russia and China to veto in the UN Security Council a draft resolution, which did not make it possible to reach an unbiased views of the situation in Syria, address the appeal to end the bloodshed and agree to a cease-fire to both parties of the conflict," Medvedev was quoted as saying.

"That resolution would not facilitate the search of a peaceful resolution to the crisis," he added.

Medvedev also informed Erdogan about Moscow's efforts to encourage dialogue between the Syrian parties and push for democratic reforms in the country. These efforts included the talks between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian Intelligence Service head Mikhail Fradkov with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Tuesday.

The president also highlighted the role of Turkey as a regional power in facilitating intra-Syrian dialogue.

Both leaders agreed to further coordinate their actions to overcome the crisis in Syria peacefully, the Kremlin said.
