Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-10 10:43

Russia has defended a flight by Russian strategic bombers near the coast of Japan as being within international rules.

Air Force spokesman Col. Vladimir Drik said Thursday two Russian Tu-195MS bombers completed a patrol mission north of Japan and over the neutral waters of the Pacific.

"All flights of the Russian Air Force were performed in strict compliance with international rules of flying over neutral waters without violating borders of other states," Drik said.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry reported a total of five Russian warplanes were spotted near the border with Japan on Wednesday.

Drik said, during the 16-hour flight, a total of 13 planes from Japan and South Korea tracked the Russian strategic bombers.
