New S-400-Triumph air defense missile systems have been delivered to Russian western military districts and will be deployed in a month, the district commander said Tuesday.
Commander Arkady Bakhin told reporters that the missiles have been tested and transported to the country's westernmost Kaliningrad exclave. But he didn't say exactly where the missiles would be stationed.
The S-400 system is capable of shooting down aircraft and missiles of all types, including strategic and middle-range missiles, five minutes after receiving a warning.
The system has a range of 60 to 250 km with a capability of shooting down 36 targets at once.
Russia has currently deployed two S-400 regiments to protect the airspace around Moscow.
Russia decided last year to deploy additional missile systems on its western borders as a response to ongoing preparations by the US to deploy anti-missile facilities in Europe. |
