The Foreign Ministry said Thursday that Russia welcomes the United Nations' decision to send a special humanitarian envoy to violence-wracked Syria.
"Moscow supports the decision of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to send Valery Amos, the envoy for humanitarian issues, to Syria urgently," the ministry said in a statement.
Russia called for the UN Security Council earlier this week to send a representative to estimate the humanitarian situation in the country.
"Politicization in that sensitive sphere is unacceptable. Delivery of the aid must be conducted without military escorting," Moscow said, urging Amos to act in an unbiased, objective and non-political manner.
Amos, the UN under secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, previously visited Libya and Sudan as Ban's representative. |
