Greece, Europe "in same boat amidst debt crisis": EP president
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-29 13:19

Debt-stricken Greece and Europe are "in the same boat" amidst the debt crisis and solidarity to Athens should be shown with further action, European Parliament (EP) President Martin Schulz said here on Tuesday during a one-day visit to the Greek capital.

"Greece has a bright future if we work together. Greek people need solidarity in action, no more words," Schulz stressed during a series of meetings with the Greek political leadership.

The German social democrat official was due to address the Greek assembly later on Tuesday on the prospects of Greece within the EU at the invitation of the Greek Speaker of Parliament Philippos Petsalnikos.

Shortly afterwards Greek lawmakers are due to vote on supplementary cuts to pensions to secure a second bailout package worth of 130-billion euro (174.89 billion U.S. dollars) by European counterparts and International Monetary Fund.

"All Europeans are in the same boat," Schultz underlined during talks with Greek President Karolos Papoulias.

On his part Papoulias expressed concern that the austerity measures imposed to address the debt crisis are "very harsh on the weakest members of Greek society to withstand."

The head of the European Parliament agreed that social cohesion should be safeguarded and beyond austerity in exchange of rescue loans, focus should be shifted on development policies.

Since May 2010 Greece depends on international multi-billion-euro aid to slash deficits and restore growth to exit the crisis under an austerity and reform drive agreed with creditors.

But missed targets due to delays in the implementation of structural reforms from the Greek side and heavy recession caused by austerity imposed by lenders on the other hand, have caused disappointment to suffering Greek citizens and scepticism among analysts over the final outcome

On Monday, the German parliament approved further financing to Greece and more chambers across the euro zone are due to follow ahead of a new EU summit in coming days that will review progress made in efforts to resolve the Greek debt crisis that since late 2009 threatens the entire European common currency area with instability.
