Most Greeks expect coalition gov't after general polls
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-01 23:24

Eight out of ten Greek citizens and analysts see the formation of a new coalition government after the upcoming general elections expected in late April or early May, according to an opinion poll released on Sunday.

The conservative New Democracy party which supports the current coalition and the painful austerity and structural reforms measures interlinked with the rescue loans, leads with 22.5 percent of votes, according to the survey printed on Sunday's local Kathimerini newspaper.

The socialist PASOK co-ruling party follows with 15.5 percent of the vote. In such a case the two parties jointly secure marginally the 38 percent threshold needed to obtain a parliamentary majority and renew their coalition.

According to the polls' results, 48 percent of respondents support the formation of a new coalition administration, though they would prefer the formation of such a coalition made up from Left parties that oppose the austerity measures rather than a new administration backed by PASOK and New Democracy.

The latest survey also revealed that eight parties will enter the new parliament, as the communists and the Leftist SYRIZA coalition will garner approximately 12 percent of votes each, followed by the newly formed Democratic Left and Independent Greeks parties which also criticize the austerity drive.

Greek Ecologist Greens along the far-right neo-Nazi "Golden Dawn" for first time are also expected to surpass the three- percent threshold required to enter the parliament.
