Russia has submitted a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council on UN monitoring mission in Syria, the country's Foreign Ministry said Friday.
"The draft aims to support efforts of UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich was quoted as saying.
According to the Itar-Tass news agency, the draft stipulated the formation of a UN monitoring mission for the initial period of three months with 300 members.
The diplomat said the Russia-drafted resolution would be considered seriously by the UN Security Council in a bid to make a decision on Saturday.
"That would be an important contribution of the international community to the promotion of Annan's plan and the sustainable peace settlement in Syria," he said.
Earlier Friday, Russia urged the adoption of a new U.N. resolution on deployment of a full monitoring mission to Syria as soon as possible.
"We should do everything possible to pass a second resolution as soon as possible to authorize a full-scale monitoring mission to Syria and influence all Syrian groups to implement Annan's plan, " Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters.
Also on Friday, Lukashevich told local reporters that it is unacceptable that the European Union (EU) is to impose new unilateral sanctions against Syria
Only the UN Security Council has the right to impose international sanctions, Lukashevich said, adding sanctions would make the situation in Syria even more unpredictable and grave.
EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said Tuesday the EU was ready to continue to impose sanctions and restrictive measures as long as what she called the "repression" continued in Syria.
EU sanctions, which will take effect on April 23, ban export of luxuries and some raw materials to Syria. |
