Georgia plans to set up a diaspora parliament so as to help overseas nationals involved in the South Caucasus country's activities, a senior government official said Wednesday.
The plan was announced during a briefing by Papuna Davitaia, state minister in charge of the diaspora affairs.
Davitaia said his office was developing a bill that proposes a 45-seat diaspora parliament. The parliament sits in session once a year for five days and serves as an advisory body to the state minister.
The Georgian community in a foreign country with at least 1,000 eligible nationals will be given the right to elect one representative for the diaspora legislature.
Thirty members in the diaspora parliament would be elected while the remaining 15 would be appointed by the state minister. |
