Greek communist party fiercely opposes austerity in pre-election rally
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-03 14:45

Greek communists do not intend to join any "hoax anti-bailout government" after Sunday's parliamentary elections, the party's General Secretary Aleka Papariga said on Wednesday.

Speaking during KKE's main pre-election rally in central Athens, she reiterated the party's objection to tough two-year austerity linked to the bailout deals clinched with international lenders since 2010.

She renewed a plea to voters to seize the opportunity to change the country's economic policy by strongly supporting the party in the upcoming ballots.

"If people will waste this opportunity, the day after will be worse," she said, fiercely rejecting the idea of KKE's participation in a possible coalition administration made up of left parties, as SYRIZA coalition leader Alexis Tsipras has suggested.

She argued that the gap between the communists and other parties regarding the handling of the debt crisis that has threatened debt-burdened Greece with a default is still too wide to bridge.

According to opinion polls, the leftist SYRIZA could win the third place and receive an exploratory mandate from Greek President Karolos Papoulias to form a government.

Conservative New Democracy and socialist PASOK, two parties which have ruled Greece over the past four decades and backed the austerity and reform drive to solve the crisis and the outgoing administration of Lucas Papademos, have seen record low supporting rate in opinion surveys.

A wide majority of Greeks appear frustrated over waves of salary cuts and tax hikes that have deteriorated recession over the past two years, and turn to anti-bailout parties, local political analysts have noted.
