Spanish politicians welcome Greek election result
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-19 13:35

The majority of mainstream politicians in Spain on Monday welcomed the Greek election result which saw a narrow win for the pro-bailout New Democracy (ND) Party.

Speaking from Mexico, where he is attending the G-20 summit, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy greeted the poll result.

"It is good news for Greece, very good news for the European Union, for the euro and also for Spain," said Rajoy.

"The European Union will help Greece, because it is a project which shows solidarity and which looks for the wellbeing of all European citizens," Rajoy said, adding that the election result would strengthen the euro and that Greece would eventually return to creating jobs and wealth.

Meanwhile, the spokesman of the center-left Spanish Socialist (PSOE) Party, Valeriano Gomez told national radio station RNE that he was pleased the Greeks "are still thinking of remaining in the euro."

Gomez said that the EU was obliged to reward the election result by opening "new negotiations" to make the austerity package to be imposed on Greece more "flexible."

"This will dispel doubt and it will also be positive for Spain," said Gomez.

The main dissenting voice came from leader of the leftist coalition Izquierda Unida, Gaspar Llamazares.

"The win for New Democtacy is a bad result for the Greeks, Spain and the EU," he posted on his Twitter account.

Llamazares said the Greeks should have voted for "a dignified life, because all else is of secondary importance," while he criticized the austerity measures imposed on the country.
