Two ETA suspects arrested in France
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-27 10:16

Two suspected members of Basque separatist group ETA were arrested by police in southwestern France, the Spanish Interior Ministry said Tuesday.

One of the two was identified as Ugaitz Errazquin Telleria, who is thought to have been behind the murders of Socialist councilor Isaias Carrasco and businessman Inaki Uria.

The other detainee is Jose Javier Oses Carrasco, who had been on the run since 2010.

They were arrested in a house in the town of Albi, 80 km north of Toulouse in southwestern France. Sources confirmed that both were armed with pistols.

The arrests followed the detention of another two suspected ETA members Oroitz Gurruchaga and Javier Aramburu in France on May 27.

The group's struggle for Basque independence has claimed 829 lives since it began in the mid 1960's.

The band called a ceasefire in January 2011 and announced a definitive end to political violence on October 20, 2011, shortly before the general elections in November.
