British MOD confirms death of one RAF crew member
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-05 11:25

British Ministry of Defense (MOD) confirmed on Wednesday that one crew member rescued from the military jets crashing incident on Tuesday in Scotland has died, while the searching for the other two missing crew was called off due to poor weather.

Two pilots have been picked up by a helicopter and flied to a hospital following the crash of two Tornado GR4 aircraft from Royal Air Force (RAF) Lossiemouth in the Moray Firth area in northeast Scotland, leaving three lifeboats searching for the rest two missing crew.

Group Captain Ian Gale, Station Commander of RAF Lossiemouth, confirmed the death of one rescued crew member, an officer from 15 (Reserve) Squadron, and said the other rescued pilot "remains under medical care, where he is in a serious but stable condition."

Admitting that the two missing crew are still unaccounted for and the search was halted due to "extremely poor weather conditions," he added that "the operation will be resumed as soon as possible."

The crashing incident is expected to be subject to full investigation, and a service inquiry will be led by the Military Aviation Authority.

The Tornado GR4 is a variable geometry, two-seat, day or night, all-weather attack aircraft, capable of delivering a wide variety of weapons, according to the RAF.

Tornado aircraft have been involved in a number of crashes in Scotland in recent years. In January 2011, an uncontrollable engine fire caused a Tornado GR4 to crash into the sea off northwest Scotland, while in 2009, two crew were killed when their Tornado F3 crashed into a hillside near Arrochar, Argyll in western Scotland.
