Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-24 09:43

A wind-fueled wildfire in northeast Spain Monday has left four people dead and thousands of others trapped indoor, authorities said on Monday.

The blaze claimed its fourth victim after a 64-year-old man died from 80 percent burns in the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital in Barcelona Monday morning.

Another two, father and daughter, died while trying to escape from the flames. A third man died from a heart attack when surrounded by the fire.

Another eight people are still hospitalized for injuries.

The wildfire, which has so far ravaged up to 13,000 hectares of land, broke out on Sunday near the town of La Junquera and spread rapidly across the Alt Emporda region near the French border.

Causes of the fire remained unclear. However, the president of the Regional Government of Catalonia Artur Mas said everything pointed to drivers who could have thrown cigarettes out of their cars.

The fire is under control in the French part. On the other side of the border, however, it was still advancing despite the efforts of hundreds of firefighters backed by water bombing planes.

Around 1,300 people have so far been evacuated.

Many roads were cut off by the fire on Sunday. Traffic resumed in the main motorway AP-7 which connects France with the Spanish Mediterranean coast on Monday, although many secondary roads remained cut off.

High speed train between Figueres, a border city in Catalonia, and France remained out of operation, but the one between Portbou and Barcelona could start working on Monday morning.
