Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-17 20:36

Vandals attacked theRussian Embassy in London, the diplomatic representative office said Friday.

The attackers, yelling anti-Syrian government slogans, hit the consular office of the Russian Embassy in London overnight with stones, Itar-Tass news agency reported.

The building was severely damaged, with many windows broken. Currently, there is no report of embassy staff being hurt, according to the report.

It was not the first time the Russian Embassy in London was attacked this year, the diplomatic mission said, adding the consulate would remain closed until 12:00 local time Friday due to the attack.

Police arriving at the scene did not take measures to stop the "continuing unsanctioned rally or detain the attackers, " which was regretful, said the office.

Russia saw this attack as "one more case of violation of the principle of inviolability of diplomatic missions," the Foreign Ministry said.

The U.N. Security Council said Thursday after a closed-door meeting that it agreed to the establishment of a new civilian office in Damascus, which would back the efforts of the U.N. and theArab Leagueto end to the 17-month crisis in Syria.

Meanwhile, theUnited NationsSupervision Mission in Syria ( UNSMIS) will end its mandate at midnight Sunday.

After the Council meeting, Vitaly Churkin, the Russian permanent representative to the U.N., said he regretted the end of the observer mission.

The five permanent Council members -- Britain, China,France, Russia and theUnited States-- and key regional players would meet on the Syrian crisis on Friday at the U.N. Headquarters in New York, Churkin added.

Russian Foreign Ministry said Thursday it was disappointed at the U.N. Security Council's failure to adopt a statement condemning a recent bomb attack in the Syrian capital Damascus.
