Britain's manufacturing still in contraction despite improvement
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-09-04 09:49

Britain's manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) rose to a four-month high of 49.5 in August from 45.2 in July, according to data provider Markit/CIPS.

The figure, marking the sharpest monthly jump since the survey began in 1992, is still slightly below the 50-mark that separates expansion from contraction.

Despite an unexpected rise, Rob Dobson, author of the Markit/CIPS Manufacturing PMI, said "overall demand remains too lacklustre to provide an imminent and sustained recovery, with investment spending still weak and domestic austerity ongoing."

Markit/CIPS data also showed PMI figures for China and the eurozone shrank again in August.

In the 17-member eurozone nations, the PMI in August remained below 50 for the 13th successive month. In China, the manufacturing activity fell to a nine-month low last month.
