Russia denies role of "transit hub" in Eurasian drug trafficking
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-09-19 14:01

Russia denied Tuesday it has become a transit hub of drug trafficking from Afghanistan to Europe.

"There is no transit of drugs to Europe via Russia," head of Russian Federal Anti-drug Service (FSKN) Victor Ivanov told reporters.

The official said the European police have no information that such a trafficking route exists. "Those who say that either are confused or do not know the real situation," he added.

According to the FSKN, Russia is one of the final destinations for Afghan drugs while the so-called drug transit route to Europe goes via Iran, Iraq, Balkans and Africa, with the profit of Afghan narco-barons reaching 250 billion U.S. dollars per year.

"Unfortunately, Russia is a consumer country where distribution of heroin is well-established. That business has already engulfed Central Asian countries," Ivanov said, adding that in Russia over 100 thousand drug addicts die every year and up to 8.5 million people use narcotic substances regularly.

Ivanov argued that despite the UN regards Afghan province of Badakhshan as drug-free territory, FSKN has information that there are 600 illegal opium-producing labs.

Six of such labs were destroyed last week during a joint operation by Russian FSKN and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The Afghan anti-drug police destroyed over 4 tons of drugs in that ambush, Ivanov added.
