French PM seeks support to approve EU fiscal pact amid public disenchantment
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-09-19 23:19

French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault on Wednesday urged a massive parliamentary approval to ratify the European Union's budget fiscal pact aimed at restoring financial stability in the single-currency bloc.

Admitting the reservation of some-left wing legislators, Ayrault said targeting "... to convince the highest number possible" of deputies as "more the vote will be massive, the stronger will be France's voice."

"My appeal to all parliamentarians is to assume their responsibilities," Ayrault said.

"Parliament's approval, which I hope will be massive, will give even more force to the president's voice in European negotiations," he added.

After the government gave an initial approval to the fiscal compact earlier in the day, the new budget discipline will be submitted to the parliament in early October.

The ruling Socialist Party enjoys a majority in both houses of parliament. But allies from the Left and Greens have said to block further prescribed austerity, a fact that would force the Socialists to rely on the conservative opposition UMP party to ensure ratification of the EU fiscal pact.

Agreed last March by the former president Nicolas Sarkozy and 24 other European leaders, the EU fiscal pact requires euro zone countries to trim their budget gaps or face sanctions.

A poll released on Monday showed 64 percent of French voters saying they would now vote against the Maastricht Treaty that led to the creation of the single currency, mirroring a growing disenchantment with the European bloc with record unemployment rate and persistent financial crisis.
