Spanish Justice Minister denies plans to limit right to protest
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-10-11 10:44

Spanish Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz Gallardon confirmed on Wednesday that the government has no plans to curtail the right to protest.

The government had "no intention at all of limiting" the right to demonstrate, Gallardon told the congress Wednesday morning.

The Spanish Constitution established that a demonstration could only be prohibited "when there is solid evidence of a threat to public order with a threat to people or property," he added.

He said that the government had the tools to"face up to those who hide behind legitimate and peaceful protest to attack, not just others, but also that same right."

The comments were made after Cristiana Cifuentes, the security delegate of the Madrid Regional Authority and a member of the ruling right-wing Popular Party, questioned whether the right to protest should be limited amid the rising wave of protests against the economic policies of Mariano Rajoy's government.

A protest close to the Spanish Congress last week ended up with police making a series of baton charges and over 64 people were injured.

The following days saw two further protests, which cut the main road through the center of Madrid, as people vented their anger towards the police.
