British underemployment rate at 10.5 pct in 2008-2012: data
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-11-29 11:10

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Wednesday said that 1 million more British people were underemployed from 2008 to 2012.

According to the official data provider, 3.05 million workers want to work more hours each week, 10.5 percent out of a total workforce of 29.41 million. The figure is 47.3 percent higher than that of the start of economic downturn in 2008.

Statistics also showed that one in every 10 full-time workers want to work more hours, while about one in four part-time workers want to increase working time in the past five years or so.

Between 2008 and 2012, British households experienced a fall in real earnings (earnings corrected for inflation) and a rise in unemployment, which may have resulted in more pressure on personal budgets and therefore increased desire for more working hours, said the ONS.

Britain started to study on underemployment from 2000, which is taken as related to the economic cycle, rising when the economy is weak and falling when the economy is strong.
