Russia capable of responding to space arms race: official
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-12-12 09:22

Russia has the capability to respond to potential arms race in the space, a senior military official said Tuesday.

"We are getting prepared for any actions ... If there will be any actions against our homeland, we are not going to stay idle," Deputy Defense Minister Col. Gen. Oleg Ostapenko told Interfax news agency.

He said Russia possesses brand-new anti-missile defense to replace the current A-135 system which protects Moscow and surrounding areas.

According to the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces, the A-135 system is capable of destroying 90 percent of incoming missiles over Moscow and up to 60 percent over Central Russia.

He added the new anti-missile umbrella would also protect the objects outside Moscow region. "These solutions could be implemented rather swiftly."

Under the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty signed by Moscow and Washington in 1972, the two sides agreed to maintain only one ABM deployment area in each country: the Moscow region in Russia and the Grand Forks Air Force Base in the United States.

However, the United States unilaterally withdrew from the treaty in 2002.
