Twelve people were injured after a fire broke out early Sunday morning in a southern German monastery, local police said.
10 monks, including one aged more than 100 years old, a fireman and a policeman are among the injured in the Franziskaner monastery in the city of Fuessen in Bavarian state, according to police officer Andreas Ruepp.
One of the injured is in serious conditions.
"The fire is now under control. But the damages are to be calculated." a statement from the fire department said.
Police are still investigating the cause of the fire, and suspected that a candle or an electric blanket might have started the fire.
The monastery was built in 1628 in Fuessen, a popular tourist attraction in south Germany. |
