Russian Airborne troops are conducting training for operations to evacuate its embassy from Syria, the troops' commander said Thursday.
"We are conducting a re-organization of the airborne troops' reconnaissance units to prepare them for that task," Colonel General Vladimir Shamanov was quoted as saying.
"This task is put for some units of the airborne troops and they are now undergoing a special training," Shamanov said, adding that these units will use the controlled parachutes and special reconnaissance equipment.
He said that to conduct such an operation, the troops must receive a direct order from President Vladimir Putin, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and the U.N. Security Council's consent for troops to be sent to the hot spot.
One of the tasks assigned to the Russian airborne troops is to evacuate the diplomats from the hot spots, a task the troops have performed before, the General added.
In August 1992, the airborne units of the 106th Tula Division evacuated Russian diplomats from Kabul, capital of Afghanistan.
