World economy closely tied with Persian Gulf: Iranian lawmaker
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-04 23:07

A senior Iranian lawmaker said that the world economy was closely tied with the sensitive region of Persian Gulf, Iran's official news agency IRNA reported Wednesday.

Alaeddin Boroujerdi, head of the Iranian Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said Iran hoped that the West did not make a strategic mistake in imposing sanctions against Iran, according to the report.

Some countries were discussing sanctions on Iran's oil industry, but the West should know that if the region was not safe for Iran' s oil export, it would certainly not safe for others too, Boroujerdi said.

He added that Iran's strategic policy was that the region's security should be provided by the regional countries.

The United States, Britain, Canada and some other Western countries said they were considering new sanctions against Iran's central bank and crude export after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) issued a report on Iran's nuclear program in November.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe suggested imposing further tough sanctions against Iran on Tuesday, after Iran's recent threat to block the strategic oil passage of Hormuz Strait, through which some 40 percent of the world's tanker-carried oil were transported to the Indian Ocean.

Iran's top officials recently threatened to seal off the strait if the Islamic republic's oil export was sanctioned.

The Pentagon has warned Iran against any attempt to block the strait, saying that interference with the transit or passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz will not be tolerated.
