Israeli FM: "No chance for breakthrough with Palestinians" in talks
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-10 15:08

Israeli and Palestinian representatives on Monday will meet in Amman, Jordan, for a second round of talks aimed at restarting long-stalled peace negotiations.

However, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman is not optimistic about the chances for success in the Quartet-brokered parley.

"The Palestinians came to the negotiations only because they couldn't say 'No' to King Abdullah," Lieberman said in the Knesset parliament on Monday.

"There is no chance for breakthrough with the Palestinians in the foreseeable future since they don't have any desire for it, and whoever says differently doesn't know what he's talking about, " Lieberman said.

The first round of talks between the parties started a week ago, following a Jan. 26 Middle East Quartet (the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia) deadline for resumption of talks.

Lieberman said he doubted the intentions of the Palestinian National Authority negotiators.

"Their only goal is to blame Israel for the failure of the talks, so that they can engage in aggressive acts against Israel in the UN and the UN Security Council after Jan. 26, in order to bring to an internationalization of the conflict," Lieberman said.

Israel's declared goal in the talks is to find a way to reach direct negotiations with their counterparts.

"Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu believes that that 2012 will be a year of negotiations," a senior political source told Xinhua, adding that they hoped to see a resumption of talks, as opposed to Lieberman's more dour view.

"We welcome the dialog, we think it is important and we hope it will eventually bear fruits. The expectations aren't high at the moment, but the talks provide an opportunity for continuous discussions through 2012," according to the source, who requested anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

When asked for comment on the status of the meeting, Prime Minister Office spokesman Mark Regev said that he could not discuss the matter.

"If these talks are to succeed they must be conducted in total discretion," Regev said.
