Watery assault steams Israeli lawmakers
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-10 02:50

A cup of water thrown in an Israeli Arab parliament member's face got his political opponent in hot water on Monday.

The incident occurred during an Education Committee debate regarding an Israeli-Arab school principal who took his students to a human-rights parade in Tel Aviv.

While the Labor party's Raleb Majadele defended the visit, Yisrael Beiteinu's Anastasia Michaeli vocally opposed his stance, disrupting his speech. Majadele then told Michaeli to "shut up," igniting a boisterous dispute between the two lawmakers.

While such verbal matches are not uncommon in the Knesset parliament, this one was only a warm-up to a bigger, wetter clash. As Majadele continued his speech, Michaeli arose, walked over to him, and without warning, threw a glass of water in his face. She then stormed out of the room.

The astonished Majadele immediately retorted, "Mr. Chairman, this says everything. I'm certain you won't allow this kind of rude and fascist behavior."

Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin condemned the incident and said he would bring the issue up with the ethics committee. "This is an act that damages the Knesset as a whole, and we mustn't allow this to occur." Rivlin said.

This is not the first time that Michaeli has lost her temper in exchanges with Arab parliamentarians.

In June 2010, soon after the Gaza flotilla incident, security guards had to restrain Michaeli, when she tried to keep Balad party member Hanin Zoabi from delivering a speech at the Knesset podium. Zoabi was one of the participants in the controversial flotilla.
