Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-10 22:49

An Iranian senior military official said Iran's Army ground forces would hold drills in February, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported on Tuesday.

Iranian Army ground forces' Commander Brigadier General Ahmad- Reza Pourdastan said new tactics would be carried out in the exercise, pointing out that new military hardware which are to be delivered to the forces by Iran's Defense Ministry would be used in the drills, said the report.

"We should increase our capabilities to confront threats due to the new situation and in the new face of threats," Pourdastan was quoted as saying.

Pourdastan also said that the major drills will be launched in eastern Iran in the second half of February, the local satellite Press TV reported on Tuesday.

On Friday, local media reported, quoting the IRGC Navy Commander Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi, that Iran's elite Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Navy plans to hold a large-scale military maneuver in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz in February.

Last week, Iran's navy ended its 10-day naval drill, dubbed " Velayat 90", in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and the Sea of Oman which began on Dec. 24 amid increasing tensions between Iran and the West over a string of issues, including Iran's alleged role in a plot to assassinate the Saudi Arabian ambassador to Washington, attacks on the British embassy in Tehran, the latest International Atomic Energy Agency report on the Iranian nuclear program, and disputes over a U.S. drone captured by Iran.
