Syria renews pledges to protect AL observers on its territories
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-11 01:01

Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al- Moallem stressed Tuesday that his country will continue shouldering its responsibilities to protect Arab League (AL) observers, denouncing any action that might "hinder the observers mission in Syria."

Al-Moallem made the remarks during his meeting with Sudanese Moustafa Mohammed Ahmed al-Dabi, head of the AL observer mission in Syria, according to a foreign ministry statement faxed to Xinhua.

Earlier in the day, Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported that two Kuwaiti military officers were slightly wounded in an attack by protesters on a team of the Arab observers in the coastal city of Latakia.

"The team of the Arab League mission in Syria was attacked by unknown protesters," it quoted officials as saying, adding that the injured observers were treated at a local hospital.

Syria's private media said that armed men fired at the observers cars, without elaboration.

During Tuesday's meeting, al-Dabi briefed al-Moallem on the findings of the observers and their tasks, which started on Dec. 27.

The top Syrian diplomat also stressed Syria's commitment to implement the AL protocol, which was signed between the two sides on Dec. 19 of last year and urged the observers to stick to objectivity and evenhandedness in their mission, according to the statement.

Al-Moallem also reasserted that his country would keep shouldering its responsibility to provide protection to the observers, "stemming from Syria's keenness to make the Arab mission a success."

The minister pointed out that some regional and international parties are questioning the mission of the observers in Syria in order to find a cover to take the Syria crisis to the UN Security Council.

On Sunday, AL ministers decided to continue their observer mission in Syria, despite criticism that they have so far failed to stop the violence and bloodshed in the country.

At the meeting in the Egyptian capital Cairo, the head of the observers issued his first report on the mission, sharing photos, maps and initial findings.

In a statement afterwards, the AL said it would continue its observer mission and called on the Syrian government to completely and immediately carry out all the protocol items signed between the two sides.

The AL says it will also work with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to improve the delegation's technical capabilities. It also called on the Syrian government and all the armed groups in the country to halt violent acts and not to interfere with peaceful protests.
